Standard patternmaking shops often use 3 or 5 Axis machines to produce models, moulds and patterns for tooling and foundry use.

Industrial robots run 6 axis as standard with the option to control up to 12 additional external axis, such as a rotary table or linear track.
This vastly increases the capacity of the robot and its working volume often exceeds that of a more expensive gantry style CNC machine, while even able to perform deep undercuts previously not possible conventionally.

Another foundry advantage is to machine direct into the casting sand, therefore negating costly patterns in the early development or prototype stages of a product.
